KEY ISSUES FOR NORTH SALT LAKE CITY

INLAND PORT, DEVELOPMENT

Over ten years ago, a deal was made at the state legislature that came back to haunt us this past year. I saw my neighbors blindsided by this deal that was made 15 years ago and watched futile attempts at the state legislature to try to extend the Legacy truck ban. The city should have a pulse on these upcoming changes and work to make changes before, not after the expiration deadline. Affected citizens should be made aware long before the enaction date when it’s too late to affect change.

Nowhere is this more important than with the inland port that will be just south and west of where we live. When completed, North Salt Lake will see an increase in truck traffic and railway usage. My number one goal as a city councilperson will be to represent the city’s interest in this development in order to mitigate the impact this increased traffic and commerce will have on our population and air quality while also taking advantage of the economic opportunities that the Inland Port could provide, including east-west bridges over the railroad tracks.

SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

I was born and raised in the state of Utah. Over the last several years I have watched as Utah’s population boomed. North Salt Lake is ideally situated to be a leader in Utah to promote sustainable growth. Our master plan needs to include planning for Transit Oriented Developments, better green space, and planning for traffic flow that an increased population will bring. If elected, I will work with the city, the county, and the state to make sure that the growth experienced in North Salt Lake will be sustainable.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

For about a decade, Utah has been experiencing tremendous economic growth. North Salt Lake has been a beneficiary of that growth. However, that growth won’t last forever. Further, the city runs on sales tax, but the sales tax base is growing unstable due to how Utah’s economy has changed in recent years. If elected, I will ensure that North Salt Lake controls its spending while working to find the right balance to stabilize the tax base.
